Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Apply principles of VTS communications
  • Clear, concise and consistent communication is used, and appropriate action is taken to confirm others have interpreted the communication correctly
       
Element: Barriers and/or problems to communication are identified and resolved in a timely manner
       
Element: Cultural awareness, sensitivity and discretion are used when communicating and interacting with others
       
Element: Apply phraseology and construct VTS communications
  • VTS messages are constructed and communicated in accordance with guideline G1132 and workplace procedures, including the application of Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP)
       
Element: Written and verbal reports relating to the VTS area are interpreted correctly in accordance with workplace procedures
       
Element: Log and record keeping, including recording of information, are conducted in accordance with workplace procedures
       
Element: All information relevant to VTS handover is communicated clearly, concisely and accurately in accordance with workplace procedures

Assessment Tasks

Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
